Excursions and Sightseeing

Opposite the floating bridge at the north end of the island is the Venetian castle of Agia Mavra. In the centre of the capital town of Lefkadas is located an archaeological museum.

On “Gyra” beach, located near the island’s main town, you can see four windmills still standing. Until the end of 20th century these windmills were used to grind large quantities of grain imported from Russia. At both “Gyra” beach and “Agios Ioannis” (Saint John) you can enjoy kite surfing or simply go for a swim. These beaches are also suitable for kids.

A few kilometres outside Lefkadas town, near the village of Frini, lies the Faneromeni Monastery, a museum of religious art. Approximately 2 km south of Lefkasda is Kalligoni, where you can visit the ruins of the prehistoric city of Nirikos.

Lefkada is not only an ideal island for sightseeing, but also a place for relaxation. Here, you can find some of the most wonderful and popular beaches anywhere in the Mediterranean, including the well known beaches of “Porto Katsiki,” “Egremnoi” and “Kathisma.”

You can also visit the “Gorge of the Bee” (“Faraggi tis Melissas”), which is situated in the former municipality of Sfakiotes. About 6 km outside town on the way to Sfakiotes, you turn right, drive about 3 km, turn right again, and continue for about another 2 km. There you will reach the Melissa spring, where you can rest and have a cold drink of crystal-clear water. Another interesting place to visit in Lefkada are the Waterfalls in Dimosari, located near Nidri.

In 1963 Aristotle Onassis bought Scorpios, a small island opposite Nidri. Since that time Nidri has become very well-known and popular. Daily excursions are available on small boats departing from Nidri to Scorpios and Meganisi.

Vasiliki, on the south coast of Lefkada, is an ideal place for wind surfing. Nearby you will find other small villages including Sivros and Agios Petros. From Vasiliki you can organize day trips to “Agiofili” beach by taking one of the small boats that depart every two hours, or travel by ferry to Kefallonia and Ithaca.

Karya In the centre of the island you will find Karya, a mountain village where you can purchase amazing, traditional, handmade woven goods. The landscape is breathtaking; full of pines, cypress trees and rare species of oak, under which you can take a pleasant walk wandering along the area’s paved paths.
